Finding a Makeup Artist that is best suited for You

Finding a makeup artist can become quite tricky, especially if it’ll be your first time having your makeup done professionally. With a special event approaching, you may feel the pressure, but don’t stress, your girl is here to help you out.

Having your makeup done can sometimes be one of the last details that you consider, but just remember – memories and photos are forever. If you don’t already have an artist in mind, it could be quite difficult to tell who you can trust, and who would be best suited to you, therefore it’s important to take the following into consideration:

First and foremost – do your research! I cannot stress this enough.

Every artist has their own unique style, so it’s important to find a handful of artists online whose style of work grabs your attention, and that’s suitable for the occasion you’re attending be it your wedding, a Halloween party, photoshoot etc. Be sure that they have a well curated portfolio of client work, as well as positive reviews.

The next step would be to send an enquiry email to find out their availability for your requested date, as well as the look you’re going for (feel free to include reference or inspo images to give the artist an idea – the more information, the better). But please remember that it’s merely an image for INSPO – meaning that the makeup in the image may not look exactly like yours due to contributing factors such as your skin type and tone, facial features and personal preferences. Also keep in mind that the models usually found on Pinterest or Instagram wear a ton of makeup for it to show up in images the way it does, this is besides the fact that those photos are almost always heavily edited.

Now I’m all about energy and vibes, so if I were to be booking an artist, I would also take into consideration the tone and the energy of the artist, in their voice on the phone, as well as in their emails. If there’s something that doesn’t sit well with you, trust it. Booking an artist is more than just having your makeup done, it should be an experience – and having to spend that much time with someone you don’t connect or vibe with can become quite awkward and take away from the experience you’re paying for.

Another important note to remember is that popular artists are sometimes booked months in advance, and therefore it would be best not to leave your booking request to the last minute, to ensure that they will have your requested date available.

You can expect to pay anywhere between R500.00 to R900 (or even more - and sometimes less) depending on a number of factors such as their qualifications, how many years of experience they have, products and equipment they use. An artist’s rate can even depend on how in-demand they are. But rates are a whole new topic for another day.

Looking at those prices alone may make you want to do your own makeup, but I can assure you that it will be worth it. There is an artist in your city for every budget, although you shouldn’t base your decision off price alone, but rather on the work of the artist, as well as their professionalism, because remember - You get what you pay for.
